Sheltered waters, consistent trade winds and easy navigation make the BVI an ideal sailing destination. Whether it’s your first charter or you’re a seasoned veteran, these crystal-clear waters will carry you to boulder-formed caves, picture-perfect beaches, and a host of island restaurants and bars. The BVI offer a great mix of sailing and land activities.

Sailing The Way You Like It

The BVI is a destination for everyone. Less experienced sailors will enjoy easy deep-water passages, line-of-sight navigation and numerous anchorages.

With a cruising area 32 miles long (48 km) and half that in width, the BVI is home to an infinite variety of adventures and the largest selection of yachts. And you’ll have easy access to everything from our renovated base in Tortola; just a short flight from Puerto Rico or a ferry ride from St. Thomas. We can arrange for transportation from the airport to the base, where you’ll find our open-air bar and restaurant, expanded pool area, 2,500 sq. ft. grocery store and Customer Service Center with ATM. It’s the perfect place to start.

Side Trips, Secrets, Sights & Sounds

Depart Road Town for The Bight at Norman Island. Snorkel the caves at Treasure Point, believed to have been the inspiration for Robert Louis Stephenson’s Treasure Island. Sail northeastward to The Baths at Virgin Gorda, nature’s Stonehenge by the sea. Enjoy a morning snorkel and hike through the stunning granite boulders along the beach. Consider "overnighting" tucked behind the tiny island of Marina Cay and relax with a drink at the hilltop bar. The next day brings an exciting reach past The Dogs. Stop here for more snorkelling on the way to Gorda Sound, where you’ll find numerous anchorages. Our sub- base at The Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda is the ideal spot to purchase water, fuel and ice, have dinner or just kick back. Gorda Sound is the jumping off point for the journey to Anegada, a coral island lying only 28 ft. above sea level. You can join one of our flotillas from the Bitter End Yacht Club and sail to Anegada with the expert guidance of a Moorings lead boat. A horseshoe reef protects this island that offers great snorkelling and a postcard perfect beach. Make sure you partake in an Anegada lobster dinner! The next day set sail for Jost Van Dyke, home to the world-famous Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar Bar. Sail back to Cane Garden Bay and enjoy a crescent-shaped beach and numerous local bars and restaurants. A return up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to the Moorings base in Road Town will provide you with just enough time to plan your next sailing vacation.

Sailing Conditions

The BVI offers calm, sheltered waters and simple navigation. Winds generally blow northeast to southeast at 10-20 knots. In the winter months, the winds can be stronger and blow more northeasterly. The tidal range is about 12 inches. Currents are only noticeable in the narrow passages between Tortola and St. John running 1-2 knots.

The boat is clean after each charter and provided with full tank of fuel and water and must be return as is. So the skipper will fill it up at the end of your charter and the passengers will need to pay for it. All cruising fees is also the responsibility of the crew. Expect to pay ± $ 35 US per day per person for food, alcohol (reasonably), and other cruising fee. In any case, the passengers will be provided with all receipt for every expense.
